They are coming for us again
Burnley won their legal battle against Everton
So, the World Cup is ongoing, not much going on regarding Everton and transfers, just ‘links’ but the dust has settled a bit now since the news came out that Burnley won a case against Everton which saw them awarded 35-40m, this goes back to the season when we got our points deduction for breaching PSR over an interest payment on the stadium. We appealed that original points deduction and we will/have, appealed this recent decision. Burnley went down that season because they weren’t good enough but they think they should sue Everton even though we didn’t gain a sporting advantage. It’s a right can of worms this is, I mean, if upheld, what is stopping other teams going after Man City and Chelsea going forward? One thing I will say is you can’t look at it has we have had our punishment (the points deduction) and now they want to punish us again because this is a club to club issue for ‘monies lost’ although in saying that, it is the same panel that awarded Burnley this 35-40m who originally gave us a points deduction and I think someone involved with the panel may have worked for Burnley in the past.
There are many looking in from the outside wondering how this is happening again, when the likes of Man City have yet to be dealt with, more on Chelsea in a bit, but with Man City, there are a hell of a lot more charges aimed at them then there is for us so that will take time, let’s be honest,,ours is a PSR breach, the stuff alleged against Man City is a bit more serious so they need to cross their T’s and dot their I’s. With Chelsea, they were accused of paying back handers to agents for them to convince their respective client to join Chelsea over another team, Chelsea didn’t have a points deduction despite them winning a ton of trophies, they did a deal with the Premier League and made a deal for about 10m.
The club came out with a statement regarding the findings, let’s see what comes of it. One thing we have been made aware of, if we pay the fine it won’t go against the books for this season as in PSR or SCR as it is now known and it won’t affect whatever transfer budget we have.
Although there is not much going on regarding transfers, one we have been working on is current Middlesborough captain Hayden Hackney. He has said apparently he wants to join us and maybe other teams being linked is just to make Everton offer what Middlesborough want. He has just one year left on his contract so we need to be mindful of what we pay I guess like we were in January when we went to Fulham for Harry Wilson who at that point had 6 months left on his contract but what Fulham wanted didn’t make financial sense, I guess, they were pushing for Europe so he would be more use to them than any fee they would be getting for him from us or anyone else. The difference with Hackney is he is younger and has a higher ceiling at this point. It will be interesting if we revisit a deal for Wilson, apparently, Aston Villa are front runners, as they will be in 4 competitions he will probably get game time there whereas I am not sure he’ll even be a starter at Everton.
In closing, we of course are wondering what players will be coming into the club as well as departing, changes are happening as far as the academy goes, which will hopefully be good for the club/first team, going forward. Moyes is currently on world cup punditry duty, some wish he was back here planning for next season, maybe that is what he is doing, scouting players, never good buying a player based on a good tournament be that the World Cup or Euros.
